Crisco casts its net to haul in Australia's best fish 'n' chip shop

The hunt is on again to find Australia's best fish 'n' chip shop with the help of chippy lovers across the nation when online voting commences for 'Crisco Australia's Best Fish 'n' Chip Shop 2009' competition on February 1.
Fish 'n' chips were believed to have originated in London's East End in 1860 and 149 years later the combo is still being sold by many fast food outlets around Australia including All Aboard Seafoods based at Bellevue, which was named top WA shop in the competition last year.
All Aboard Seafoods Part-owner Rino Saccoccia, who has worked in the fish 'n' chip business with his parents for the past decade, said the industry had changed significantly over that time.
"Local Australian product is higher in demand so that is what we are striving to provide more of," he said.
"Our most popular fish is local WA snapper and gummy shark. Plus we always ensure we use only the best products including a premium quality and clean oil - we use Crisco Sunola, and we aim to provide great customer service."
While All Aboard Seafoods hopes to defend its top WA position the shop will no doubt face some fierce competition after Aristos Fish Shop, part owned by former 'Surprise Chef' Aristos Papandroulakis, was also entered into the contest.
Aristos part owns the Bunbury based shop with his brother Strathan, mother Athena and friend Ross Fisher.
Aristos' brother and business partner Strathan said he had also noticed a huge demand for local seafood, which he claimed was the biggest plus of the Aristos Fish Shop's menu.
"Our menu is 90 percent Australian seafood and we are proud supporters of the local fishing industry," he said. "Our biggest seller is local whiting, local bronze whaler shark and snapper."
"Fish 'n' chips have definitely increased in price over the past decade as the availability of seafood is not as great with so many fishing restrictions, but we do our best and try to source the best in WA."
Crisco Oil's National Marketing Manager Donelle Jones said fish 'n' chips were an iconic Australian takeaway meal.
"I'm sure we can all remember the takeaway nights when we looked on in anticipation as mum or dad unravelled the lovely battered fish and hot chips out of the butchers paper, care of the local fish 'n' chip shop," she said.
"This Aussie dish is a great reason for people to get behind 'Crisco Australia's Best Fish 'n' Chip Shop 2009' and celebrate the success of local chippies across the country."
Ms Jones said the competition attracted almost 200 entrants in 2008 and was fuelled by just under 10,000 online votes.
"With the success the competition encountered last year we expect to double the number of entrants and votes this year.
"The public will be able to start voting for their favourite fish 'n' chip shop, if it is registered in the competition, From February 1.
"If your local chippy isn't registered be sure to encourage them to enter for a chance at winning the title."
The winner of 'Crisco Australia's Best Fish 'n' Chip Shop 2009' will win a trip for two to Daydream Island as well as a public relations package valued at $2,400*.
There is an added bonus for online voters who will also have the chance to win a trip for two to Daydream Island or great instant prizes including Roman Picnic Sets, Diamantina High Back Chairs, Bill Granger 'Every Day' cookbooks and Coles Group and Myer gift cards*.
